The default is costing you

Most Affluent Investors Are Still Sitting in Somebody Else’s Model Portfolio

Most affluent UK investors default to their high street bank adviser, or leave surplus wealth sitting in deposits.

Generic, bank-owned platforms are not built around your goals, your tax position or your appetite for risk. They are built to be administered at scale.

Meanwhile the bar has moved. The FCA’s Consumer Duty has been in force since 31 July 2023, and investors are entitled to clearer, fairer and more transparent service than ever.

So the question worth asking is simple: is your portfolio being managed the way it should be?

A portfolio should be built around your goals, your timeframe and your appetite for risk, not around the average investor.

The Oakglen Wealth approach

Independent, not bank-owned

Oakglen Wealth is a privately owned, independent investment manager, free from the conflicts of interest that can come with bank-owned or platform-based wealth managers.

Access to private markets and real estate

Beyond mainstream funds, we can open the door to private market and real estate opportunities not typically available through a high street bank adviser.

Built for the long term

Rather than chasing short-term performance, our approach focuses on long-term, risk-managed positioning designed to help protect and grow wealth through changing markets.

Who we look after

Our clients are private individuals, families and trustees near you and across the UK: people planning for retirement, people who have recently sold a business, and people thinking carefully about passing wealth to the next generation. Their names stay private, always.

Our model is relationship-led rather than volume-led, so you speak directly to the people looking after your money rather than to a call centre. If our approach is not right for your circumstances, we will tell you so in the first conversation.

Private clients, families and trustees have been looked after by this team since 2016. We deliberately publish no star ratings, review scores or client counts, because client confidentiality comes before marketing.

Client situations we are asked to help with most

Retirement in sight

A couple approaching retirement who want one clear plan instead of three legacy pensions and a cash pile.

After a business sale

A founder holding sale proceeds on deposit, wanting a considered structure before inflation quietly erodes them.

Passing wealth on

Families and trustees planning carefully how, and when, the next generation inherits.

Anonymised by design: we never name, quote or identify the clients we look after. These are the situations, not the people.

Every relationship begins the same way: a confidential conversation, with no obligation to proceed. Ask us anything you would want verified.

Straight answers

The Questions Clients Actually Ask First

Switching manager feels like a large decision. These are the five concerns that come up most often, answered plainly.

I already have an adviser at my bank, why would I switch?

Bank advisers often work within a limited product range designed for scale, not for you specifically. Oakglen Wealth is independent and privately owned, so recommendations are built around your goals rather than a bank’s own funds or platform. A conversation costs nothing, and you are under no obligation to move anything.

Wealth management fees always seem confusing. How do I know what I am actually paying?

This is a common frustration across the industry, which is exactly why we set out fees clearly and in plain English before you commit to anything. Under the FCA’s Consumer Duty rules, firms must demonstrate fair value, and we are happy to walk you through the total cost of managing your portfolio in your initial conversation.

Is my money actually safe with an independent firm rather than a big bank?

We are proud to be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, which means we operate under the same regulatory framework and obligations as larger institutions, including strict rules on the safeguarding of client money.

I do not have time to switch or restructure everything right now.

You do not need to make any decisions on the first call. It is simply a confidential conversation to understand your current position and whether a more personalised approach could work better for you. If it is not the right fit, there is no obligation to take things further.

How do I know a personalised portfolio will perform better than what I already have?

No manager can promise a particular outcome, and the value of investments can fall as well as rise. Our focus is not on chasing short-term performance but on building a long-term, risk-managed strategy suited to your specific goals and timeframe. Access to private markets and real estate opportunities, alongside mainstream investments, is one way we aim to build resilience that a generic model portfolio is not designed to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not covered here, raise it on the call. Nothing is off limits.

Is Oakglen Wealth regulated?

Yes, and we are proud of it. Oakglen Wealth Limited is registered in England and Wales and we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This means we operate under strict rules on client money, suitability of advice and fair treatment of customers, and our authorisation is publicly verifiable on the FCA Financial Services Register.

Who owns Oakglen Wealth?

Oakglen Wealth is independently and privately owned. The firm was established in 2016 and remains privately held, which means the team combines institutional experience with the independence of a privately held company.

What services does Oakglen Wealth provide?

The firm provided discretionary and advisory investment management services, structured as a privately owned UK limited company which was registered as an FCA regulated firm on 2 August 2022. Alongside those mandates we offer financial planning for retirement and intergenerational wealth transfer, and access to private market and real estate opportunities in addition to mainstream investments.

What is the Consumer Duty and how does it affect me?

The FCA’s Consumer Duty has been in force since 31 July 2023 and sets out cross-cutting rules on how firms should act to deliver good outcomes for clients, covering fair value, clear communication, suitable products and appropriate client support. As an FCA-regulated firm, we align our processes with these requirements, which in practice means clearer fee explanations and documented suitability for every recommendation.

How is client money protected?

We are proud to be an FCA-authorised and regulated firm, which means we are required to follow strict rules on the safeguarding of client money, in line with FCA regulatory standards. We will explain exactly how your assets are held and who custodies them before you commit to any mandate.

How are your fees structured and what are the ongoing costs?

Fees are set out in writing, in plain English, before you appoint us. That includes the management fee for your mandate, any underlying fund or custody charges, and anything else that affects the total cost of managing your money. Under the Consumer Duty, firms must be able to demonstrate fair value, and we would rather have that conversation openly at the outset than surprise you later.

What happens if my portfolio underperforms, and can I exit?

The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results, and no manager can guarantee a particular outcome. What we can commit to is a documented strategy, regular review meetings and clear reporting, so you always understand how your portfolio is positioned and why. The terms for ending a mandate, including notice periods and how assets are transferred or realised, are set out in our terms of business and explained before you sign.

How is investment income and growth taxed?

Tax treatment depends entirely on your individual circumstances, the wrappers used and the type of return generated, and the rules may change in future. Our planning work considers your tax position when shaping a strategy, and we will tell you clearly where specialist tax or legal advice is needed rather than straying outside our remit.

What happens after I request a conversation?

The request form asks 3 short questions. A specialist will review what you have shared and contact you to arrange a convenient time. The conversation itself is confidential and unpressured. Nothing on this page constitutes personal financial advice, and requesting a conversation does not create any advisory relationship or obligation to proceed.
